Attractions for Visitors on the Tathra to Bermagui Road
Tathra - Tanja - Wapengo - Murrah
The Scenic Route along the Tathra-Bermagui Road is one of the most spectaular coastal drives on the Far South Coast. Passing through spotted gum forests in Mimosa Rocks National Park, the landscape then breaks into rolling green hills with a backdrop of densely wooded mountains to the north-west, peaked by Mumbulla Mountain, sacred to the Yuin people.
A number of original timber bridges remain along the route, crossing some of the many rivers, creeks and estuaries, including the Bega and Murrah rivers, Wapengo and Cuttagee lakes, Nelson, Middle and Baragoot lagoons. Award winning oysters are grown in a number of the waterways. Some of the most unspoilt bays and beaches in the National Parks system can be accessed from this road, with idyllic picnic and camping spots.
For all these reasons, the area has attracted many creative people over the past twenty years and there are now artists, poets, writers, filmmakers, photographers and musicians living between Tathra and Bermagui – an area of great creative energy. Since the Tathra-Bermagui Road was fully sealed, some unique, quality art and fine food venues have opened, adding further inspiration to this beautiful coastal drive and making it a very special experience.
