Whale Watching

Large numbers of humpback whales travel past each year, earning the Sapphire Coast the enviable title of “Humpback Highway”.

Migrating whales like to linger along our coastline to fatten up their young before heading to Antarctica, so we get the added bonus of seeing the whole family in transit!

Whales can be spotted as early as May as they make the journey north to give birth, but the prime season for whale watching is from mid August to early November.

The peak of the whale season is late October.

The waters of the Sapphire Coast are one of the few places in the world where humpbacks can be observed lunge feeding.

Seeing these gentle giants up close is a unique experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Relaxed estuary fishing is also popular, with a good variety of fish available straight out of Merimbula Lake, the oyster racks on both sides of the lake offer superb fishing for Bream, Flathead, Tailor and often huge numbers of Trevally, with plenty of other surprises a possibility.

Pambula lake offers some nice Salmon down near the mouth entrance with a few good size Flathead and Tailor to be found along with Whiting often spotted easily from the shoreline.

Surfing, Stand-up Paddle Boarding & Boogie Boarding

Fantastic waves for both learners and experienced surfers on some of the most pristine surf beaches on the east coast.

Known as a rather fickle, but awesome left-hander, Merimbula Bar is one of Australia’s legendary surf breaks.  When it’s good, it’s really, really good and will dish out long and changeable rides including deep barrel and lip sections.  Main Beach tends to be less crowded and also offers some great rides when the conditions are right.  If you’re really lucky, the right-hander classic wave of Pambula Rivermouth will be working – only on the biggest of swells – but when the swell hits, the waves are perfect and is always worth a check.

Merimbula & Pambula beaches offer great conditions for learning and your choice of surfboards, boogie boards and stand-up paddle boards are available to hire, along with experienced tutors to get you and the family having fun out on the waves in no time!

Explore the wreck of “The Empire Gladstone” now a spectacular artificial reef attracting a prolific and diverse amount of marine life.  Wrecked on the night of September 5th 1950, the ship now lies in 10 metres of water just off Merimbula.  Though mostly collapsed you are still able to swim through the drive shaft passage and explore around the wreckage.

Bar Beach and Short Point also offer terrific diving & snorkeling in 2 – 10 metre conditions.
